Going Nutty

Avian Husbandry

Publication date : 29/06/2018

How to maintain a cockatoos beak can be as simple as giving it a nut. Most parrot species eat nuts in the wild, thus the huge and often intimidating beak which is designed to break and open nuts. Often these species in captivity grow long and uncomfortable beaks because they have nothing to chew on. Chewing is a natural self maintenance behaviour as well as a means to investigate their environment and to eat with. Beak maintenance is your responsibility as animal care givers.

Check with your Vet or Curator on what diets are best and see what you can offer. Remember Safety First, always safety first!
