On the 28 and 29 July, Gold Reef City theme park hosted and environmental enrichment workshop, presented by AKAA and Shape Africa. The workshop was attended by farm yard and bird show staff. The experience was very rewarding as some staff has been working with animals for almost 20 years and in that time has never been exposed to this type of training. The workshop accommodated all staff from literate to illiterate. The staff were divided into two groups and focused on the Capuchin monkey and the domestic rabbit. The staff was amazed to learn that even though they worked with the specific animal daily, there was still so much they didn’t know about that animal. It was interesting to see how the staff participated and understood the basic concepts and principles taught by the facilitators. In my opinion the workshop was a huge success and has enhanced the relationship between Gold Reef City, AKAA and Shape to the extent that they would be presenting a workshop every 6 months. We are looking forward to future endeavors and training with AKAA and Shape.
