BirdLife South Africa strives to conserve birds and their habitats. We work with people to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources. We are members the largest network of bird conservation organisations in the world, and are the only national, dedicated bird-conservation organisation in South Africa. BirdLife South Africa is a membership-based NGO with >6 000 members in 40 bird clubs throughout South Africa. The mission of BirdLife South Africa is to promote the enjoyment, conservation, study and understanding of wild birds and their habitats.
The Seabird Division of BirdLife South Africa focuses on two main aspects of seabird conservation at present, coastal seabirds (specifically the African Penguin) and pelagic seabirds through the Albatross Task Force (ATF). The penguin work focuses on working with the government and fisheries to promote better fisheries management that will benefit not only penguins but other seabirds as well. The ATF works closely with the trawl and longline fisheries to prevent the accidental deaths of albatrosses, petrels and other seabirds due to their interactions with the fisheries.
